Discography

What is the purpose of a discogram?

Discography can help identify the source of your back or neck pain. Discography is performed by inserting a needle into one of more of your discs. A small amount of x-ray contrast or dye injected through the needle to visualize the internal disc structure.

What will happen?

An IV will be started in your arm so we can administer medications to make you more comfortable during the examination as well as control any discomfort that may arise during the injection into the disc space. A Radiologist will perform this test. Utilizing fluoroscopy (x-ray) guidance, the Radiologist will insert a needle in to the affected disc(s). A small amount of x-ray dye will then be injected through the needle into the disc. The Radiologist will then ask you to describe the location and the severity of the discomfort you are experiencing. The Radiologist may then administer a small amount of local anesthetic into the disc in attempt to reduce the level of discomfort caused by the dye. Once done in the discography department you will have a CT scan to complete the test.

What is the prep?

• Do not take your pain medication the morning of your exam.
• Do not eat or drink after midnight the night before your exam.
• Discontinue taking aspirin or any other anti-inflammatories at least 10 days prior to your procedure.
• Contact your physician prior to your procedure if you are taking coumadin or heparin.

Can I drive home after appointment?

You must have a designated driver to take you home.

What if I have previous x-rays?

Please bring all pertinent x-rays, CTs, myelograms, and MRI films with you to your appointment.

What should I wear?

Comfortable clothing is fine.

How long will I be there?

Plan to be at our facility three hours for the entire procedure.

Can I return to work?

We will give you post procedure instructions before your procedure and answer any questions you may have. You will need to take the entire day off the day of procedure so you rest quietly at home the remainder of the day.
