Epidural
The most commonly performed injection is an epidural steroid injection.
What should I expect?
Prior to the injection, you will be given a local anesthetic, in the area of the injection site. A steroid will be injected directly around the dura, the sac around the nerve roots that contains cerebrospinal fluid (the fluid that the nerve roots are bathed in). Fluoroscopy (x-ray) is used for guidance.
How will this help me?
Injecting around the dura sac with steroid can noticeably decrease inflammation related with common conditions such as spinal stenosis, disc herniation or degenerative disc disease. The effects of the injection are likely to be temporary (one week to one year). However an epidural can be very favorable in providing relief for patients during episodes of severe back pain allowing them to continue with their physical therapy.
What do I need to bring?
Bring any x-rays, MRIs and reports with you to your injection.

Myelogram/CT
What is a myelogram?
A myelogram is an x-ray procedure used to examine the spinal canal of your back. It will help your physician better understand your back problem.
What should I expect?
A Radiologist will perform this procedure and answer questions you may have. Utilizing fluoroscopy (x-ray) guidance the Radiologist will insert a needle into the subarachnoid space of your spinal canal. Contrast (x-ray dye) will be injected into the canal. Then several x-rays are taken to show the spinal canal and the nerves within it. After the myelogram is completed you will have a CT for additional pictures.
