Preps for Barium Enema (BE) and IVP

A cleansing kit will be given to you, which will help prepare you for either your barium enema study or your IVP exam. You will need to follow and complete all directions on the inside cover of the kit. This ensures that your body is thoroughly cleaned out and avoids having to repeat the procedure.

This kit may be mailed to you, picked up at our Diamond Hill and Grant locations, or your physician may have them in their office.

Barium Enema: The preparation begins 24 hours prior to your exam.

Follow a clear liquid diet (no milk, cream, or non-dairy creamer may be used). During this preparation period, you will have a high fluid intake. You will need to drink several glasses of water at specific times stated on the prep kit inside cover. Your meals that day will consist of a clear liquid lunch and evening meal, such as clear broth, strained fruit juices without pulp, flavored gelatin that is not red (do not add any ingredients), soft drinks, black coffee, or plain tea.

That evening you will start the cleansing procedure. This requires you to take a laxative prep, (drink mix and 4 small pills), which will cleanse your intestinal tract. Individual intestinal responses vary, so remain close to toilet facilities once you have started the cleansing portion of this prep.

Two hours prior to the day of your exam, you will need to insert the suppository provided in the prep kit. Follow instructions precisely.
