Self-pay medical screenings offer individuals an opportunity to take more control of their healthcare. In addition to providing important medical information and the early detection of potential health problems, they can help motivate individuals to make lifestyle changes such as dieting, exercising and smoking cessation.
With the exception of Bone Density, the exams offered on our CT screening program are self-pay and not covered by insurance. The reason these screenings are not covered has more to do with the complexities of our national health policy than what may be best for individuals. Depending on the exam, results are either sent to patients via certified mail within five business days or given to the patient immediately following their exam. Payment in full is due at the time of the exam.
Patients experiencing symptoms, pain or any related medical issues should see their physician and should NOT come in for a screening examination. These screenings are best suited for people who are asymptomatic but are of screening age or have a family history that puts the at a high risk for related medical problems.
Coronary artery disease (CAD) is the leading cause of death in the United States, 500,000 Americans die from coronary artery disease (heart attack) yearly. Most have no warning prior to their death. Early detection of calcified atherosclerotic plaque can prompt preventative action to minimize risk of heart attack or direct people to seek medical evaluation for further testing. Coronary atherosclerosis can be slowed, stopped and possibly reversed before artery blockage results in heart muscle damage or death.
The Heart Scan is non-invasive and does not require special preparation or dietary restrictions. It takes just 15 minutes to complete and detects and quantifies calcified atherosclerotic plaque in the coronary arteries. A score is computed based on the amount of calcification detected.
This screening is recommended for men 45 years and older and women 55 years and older with no risk factors. If a risk factor such as family history of heart disease, high blood pressure or elevated cholesterol levels is involved, the recommended age ranges start ten years earlier. Studies show that this screening is most useful in predicting heart problems in intermediate risk patients--those without symptoms but with at least one traditional risk factor.
Bone Density Screening measures bone mineral density for the detection of osteoporosis, a condition of reduced bone mass resulting in increased fracture risk. This 15 minutes scan is recommended for post menopausal women and for people taking corticosteroids and thyroid medications. Additionally, it is recommended for those who have a diet low in calcium, smoke, drink heavily and/or do not exercise. Bone Densitometry uses ultra-low dose radiation, less than a chest x-ray. This is the only scan in our Screening Program which may be covered by insurance if ordered by a physician.
Total Body Fat Analysis Screening measures not only fat tissue mass, but lean tissue mass and body mineral content. It is a 6 minute scan that can provide baseline information for the design of health, dietary and fitness plans. There are no dietary or work out restrictions prior to this screening. Results are formatted and printed out on a one page report. This scan provides exceptionally precise results and the report will also convey where fat is distributed throughout the body.
